1959 Lionel H0 Sets

In many ways, 1959 was Lionel’s first year “on their own” in H0. Previously, the Lionel H0 lines had been either manufactured by Rivarossi or by Athearn. In 1959, many elements of the product line were in fact manufactured by Lionel.  It was also the moment for Lionel to make a pitch to the “serious” model railroad community.  Lionel did so with a catalog insert in the October, 1959 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman and the Fall 1959 issue of Model Trains.

While there were some toy aspects to Lionel’s 1959 product line, such as the 0805 radioactive waste car and the 0145 operating gateman, most of the locomotives and cars in the 1959 product range would be worthy of any serious model railroader’s layout of that era. In fact, there were some interesting locomotives, such as the 0591 New Haven Rectifier electric locomotive.  The Lionel train sets of that era were also worth the attention of the serious model railroader.

The flat cars with loads, such as 0801, 0800 and 0814 were from Athearn. On the other hand, the 0860 derrick car could be from Rivarossi, Athearn or Lionel production. The same number was used for each production runs.
