1964 Lionel H0 Sets

The Lionel catalog for 1964 was somber in black and white and blue.  It matched the mood of the country. A young vibrant President of the United States had been assassinated.  Lionel was bleeding financially, too. Roy Cohn, after several years of massive financial losses, was no longer in control. After years of bright colors, the somber colors were matched by the diminished size of the catalog, down to 24 pages.  Lionel’s color for 1964 was blue, for good reason.  The future was uncertain.

Likewise, the future of Lionel H0 was beginning to become uncertain. There were no new items. The individual Santa Fe diesels illustrated in the catalog were incorrect; Lionel’s were ALCo FA’s, those shown in the catalog were EMD F’s. Even by the somewhat loose character of Lionel’s catalog illustrations, this was odd.

In all, a bleak array of train sets at a sad time for the United States and a sad time for Lionel. So much of what was comprised in 1964’s Lionel H0 sets were seemingly just grabbed off of the shelves.  All of the freight sets used the 837-100 Minneapolis & St. Louis caboose, regardless of what locomotive pulled the train.  Likewise, only the most expensive sets used the 11/4 Amp 0101 Power Pack. All other sets got the emaciated .8 Amp 0103.  Even the train set descriptions tried to cover up things; describing a steam locomotive as “two units” was a stretch.

The end of Lionel H0 was near.
